Special Colloquium

Title:  A new way to measure potential and transverse velocity

Speaker: Prof. HongSheng Zhao (University of St. Andrews)

Time: 3:00 pm, September 5th (Thursday)

Location: Lecture Hall, 3rd floor

Abstract: The conventional galaxy dynamics are approximations of relativity and hence often neglects important and measurable informations. Eg, it is often assumed that the transverse velocity is not measurable for distant galaxies. Here I demonstrate how to recover new information in redshifts and lensing. I show that relativistic effects can lead to measurable corrections in galaxy dynamics and lensing. I discuss how future dedicated observations of these subtle effects can open new channels to observe the universe, especially new ways to measure proper motion of distant galaxies using only spectra.
