SHAO Astrophysics Colloquium
Title: Searching for new structures in the Milky Way and beyond
Speaker: Rafael S. de Souza (SHAO)
Time: 3pm, June. 03th (Thursday)
Location: Lecture Hall, 3rd floor
Abstract:
Modern astronomy has been rapidly increasing our ability to see deeper into the universe, acquiring enormous samples of cosmic populations. Gaining astrophysical insights from these datasets requires a wide range of sophisticated statistical and machine learning methods. During this talk, I will describe some of the projects of the Cosmostatistics Initiative (COIN), an interdisciplinary community I founded in 2014. I will particularly focus on some of our recent results related to the search for new stellar structures in the Milky Way, which includes the discovery of Open Clusters, Young stellar clusters and objects and the identification of a high-pitch angle structure in the Sagittarius Arm.
